# Abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp for Shopify and WooCommerce

> Abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp is a reminder sent to a shopper who started checkout but did not order, with a link back to the cart. It needs the shopper's phone number, WhatsApp opt-in and an approved marketing template. Shopify stores can trigger it from checkout events; WooCommerce stores usually need a cart-recovery plugin that reports abandoned carts.

- A WhatsApp cart reminder is a marketing template in Meta's rules, so it needs marketing opt-in and is charged as marketing.
- Without a phone number captured at checkout, there is nobody to remind; make the phone field required.
- One reminder after about an hour and one the next day is enough; a third mostly annoys.
- Shopify reports checkouts that did not become orders; WooCommerce has no built-in abandoned cart tracking.
- Fix the reasons carts are abandoned, such as a surprise delivery charge, before you chase them.

A shopper fills her cart on your Shopify store at 10 pm: two kurtis and a scarf, ৳3,850. She reaches checkout, sees the delivery charge, gets a phone call, and the tab closes. Your store dashboard now shows an abandoned checkout with her phone number. In most Bangladeshi shops, that is where the story ends.

A short WhatsApp message the next morning, with a link straight back to her cart, would get read. Email reminders often sit unopened in a Gmail tab nobody checks. This guide explains how to set up WhatsApp cart reminders properly on Shopify and WooCommerce, including the Meta rules most guides skip.

## What is abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp?

Abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp is an automated reminder sent to a shopper who started checkout but did not place the order, with a link back to the saved cart. It works because the shopper already wanted the product. You are not finding a new customer, just bringing back one who got interrupted.

An [abandoned cart](https://salemag.net/glossary/abandoned-cart) only becomes recoverable if three things are true: you know who the shopper is (a phone number), you are allowed to message them (opt-in), and you have a link that restores their cart. Miss any one and there is nothing to send.

## Which WhatsApp template category does a cart reminder use?

A cart reminder uses the marketing category. Meta's template guidelines put cart reminders under "retargeting", a marketing objective, with an example along the lines of "You left items in your cart, check out now". It is not a utility message, because the shopper has not placed an order yet.

That has three consequences:

| Rule | What it means for cart reminders |
|---|---|
| Marketing opt-in | The shopper must have agreed to receive marketing messages from you on WhatsApp |
| Marketing price | Each delivered reminder is charged at Meta's marketing rate for the recipient's country |
| Delivery limits | Meta limits how many marketing messages a person receives, so some reminders may not be delivered |

Submitting a cart reminder as utility to save money usually backfires, because Meta can recategorise it as marketing. Messages after the order is placed are a different story: those are utility, as our guide to [order status update templates](https://salemag.net/blog/order-status-updates-whatsapp-templates) shows. Our guide to [WhatsApp template categories](https://salemag.net/blog/whatsapp-template-categories) explains the line between the two.

## How do I get WhatsApp opt-in at checkout?

Get opt-in at checkout with a clear consent line or checkbox next to the phone field, saying that you will send order updates and offers on WhatsApp. The shopper must know what they are agreeing to.

Two practical steps:

1. **Make the phone number required.** On Shopify, checkout settings let you require a phone number in the shipping address. For COD delivery in Bangladesh you need it anyway, since the rider has to call.
2. **Add the consent wording.** For example:

```
☐ অর্ডার আপডেট আর অফার WhatsApp-এ পেতে চাই।
☐ Send me order updates and offers on WhatsApp.
```

Keep a record of who ticked it. If a customer later says "I never agreed", you want to know where the consent came from. A shopper who messaged you first on WhatsApp is a different case: they opened the chat, which is a stronger signal than a checkbox, but promotional follow-ups still need their agreement.

## How does abandoned cart detection work on Shopify and WooCommerce?

Shopify reports checkouts that were started, so a tool can wait and check whether an order followed. WooCommerce has no built-in abandoned cart tracking, so stores add a plugin that records carts left at checkout. The table compares the two.

| | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in abandoned cart tracking | Yes, abandoned checkouts are recorded | No, needs a cart-recovery plugin |
| Built-in reminders | Abandoned checkout emails | Depends on the plugin, usually email |
| Recovery link | Provided by Shopify for each checkout | Generated by the plugin |
| Phone number | Captured if the checkout asks for it | Captured if the checkout form asks for it and the plugin records it |
| Path to WhatsApp | A WhatsApp tool that receives Shopify's checkout events | A plugin that can pass carts to a WhatsApp tool, for example by webhook |

On WooCommerce, check before you choose a plugin: does it capture the phone number before the order is placed, does it generate a recovery link, and can it send the cart to another system by webhook? If the answer to the last one is no, your reminders are limited to whatever channels the plugin itself supports.

## When should I send a WhatsApp cart reminder?

Send the first reminder about an hour after the shopper leaves, and at most one more the next day. Earlier feels like being watched; much later, the shopper has bought elsewhere or forgotten why they wanted it.

| Reminder | Timing | Content |
|---|---|---|
| First | About 1 hour after abandonment | Friendly reminder, cart total, link back |
| Second (optional) | About 24 hours after | Short nudge, maybe low stock if true, or a small time-limited offer |
| Third | Do not send | Blocks and reports cost more than the rare recovery |

And always check for an order before each reminder. Nothing annoys a customer more than "you forgot your cart!" an hour after they paid the rider.

## What should a WhatsApp cart reminder say?

A cart reminder should say who you are, what is waiting, the total, and give one button or link back to the cart. Short wins.

A Bangla version:

```
আসসালামু আলাইকুম {{1}}, আপনার কার্টে ৳{{2}}-এর পণ্য এখনও রাখা আছে।
অর্ডার শেষ করতে নিচের বাটনে চাপুন। কোনো প্রশ্ন থাকলে এখানেই জানান।
[Order shesh korun]
```

And in English:

```
Hi {{1}}, the items in your cart (৳{{2}}) are still saved for you.
Tap below to finish your order, or reply here if you have a question.
[Complete order]
```

The "reply here" line matters in Bangladesh. Many shoppers abandon a cart because of a question: "Dhakar baire charge koto?", "COD hobe?", "size thik hobe to?". A reminder that invites a reply turns into a sales chat, and inside that chat your team or an AI assistant can answer freely for the next 24 hours.

## Why do Bangladeshi shoppers abandon carts in the first place?

Bangladeshi shoppers often abandon carts over the delivery charge, payment rules or a question nobody answered. Fixing those causes recovers more sales than any reminder.

- **Surprise delivery charge.** Show Inside Dhaka and Outside Dhaka charges on the product page, not only at the last step.
- **Advance payment for outside Dhaka.** If you ask for a delivery-charge advance by bKash, say so early. A surprise at checkout loses the shopper.
- **Unanswered questions.** A visible WhatsApp button on the product page catches the "size chart den" message before the shopper gives up.
- **Long forms.** Every extra field costs completions. Name, phone, address and area are usually enough.

## How does SaleMag handle abandoned cart recovery?

SaleMag's [abandoned cart recovery](https://salemag.net/features/abandoned-cart-recovery) works with Shopify and BigCommerce. A Shopify checkout with no matching order from that customer after 30 minutes is treated as abandoned; BigCommerce reports abandoned carts itself. The *Cart abandoned* trigger then starts your automation once per cart, and you choose the wait times and the channel: a WhatsApp template, SMS or email. Messages can include the cart total, currency and the store's recovery link. If the same customer places an order first, the cart is marked recovered and no reminder goes out.

SaleMag syncs WooCommerce products, customers and orders, but does not detect WooCommerce abandoned carts. If your WooCommerce cart-recovery plugin can send carts to a webhook, an automation's incoming webhook URL can receive them, read the shopper's phone, email and name, and use values from the payload in the message. There is no automatic discount-code generator; you can write a code you created in your store into the text.

## Next steps

Start with the basics this week: make the phone field required, add a WhatsApp consent line at checkout, and submit one marketing template for cart reminders. Then set a single reminder at one hour and watch the results for a month before adding a second. To connect your Shopify store and build the reminder flow, [start free with SaleMag](https://salemag.net/register) or see [pricing](https://salemag.net/pricing).

## Steps

1. **Capture phone and consent**: Make the phone field required at checkout and add a clear WhatsApp updates consent line or checkbox.
2. **Detect abandoned carts**: Use Shopify's checkout events, or a WooCommerce cart-recovery plugin that records carts left at checkout.
3. **Write a marketing template**: Write a short reminder with the cart link, submit it to Meta as marketing, and wait for approval.
4. **Set the timing**: Send the first reminder about an hour after abandonment and an optional second one the next day.
5. **Skip shoppers who ordered**: Check for a new order before each reminder so nobody is chased after buying.

## FAQ

### Can I send abandoned cart reminders on WhatsApp?

Yes. You can send a WhatsApp cart reminder through the official WhatsApp Business API, using an approved message template, to shoppers who gave their phone number and opted in to WhatsApp messages from your store.

### Is an abandoned cart reminder a utility or marketing template?

An abandoned cart reminder is a marketing template. Meta's template guidelines list cart reminders under retargeting, which is a marketing objective, so the message needs marketing opt-in and is charged at the marketing rate.

### When should I send a WhatsApp cart reminder?

Send the first WhatsApp cart reminder about one hour after the shopper leaves checkout, and at most one more the next day. Later reminders rarely recover carts and raise the chance of blocks.

### Does WooCommerce track abandoned carts by default?

No. WooCommerce does not track abandoned carts out of the box. Stores add a cart-recovery plugin, which records carts left at checkout and can send reminders or pass the cart to another tool.

### Does Shopify send abandoned checkout reminders?

Yes. Shopify can send abandoned checkout emails itself. To remind on WhatsApp instead or as well, you need a tool connected to the WhatsApp Business API that receives Shopify's checkout events.

### Should I add a discount to a cart reminder?

Not in the first reminder. Offering a discount every time teaches shoppers to abandon carts on purpose; if you use one, save it for the second reminder and make it small and time-limited.

### How much does a WhatsApp cart reminder cost?

Meta charges per delivered marketing template, at a rate set by the recipient's country, so each reminder has a cost. Check Meta's pricing page for the current rate and compare it with your average order profit.
