# What is RTO (return to origin)? Meaning & examples

> RTO, short for return to origin, is when a courier cannot complete a delivery and sends the parcel back to the seller. It usually happens with cash-on-delivery orders when the customer refuses the parcel, cannot be reached or gave a wrong address, and the seller often pays for both trips.

## What is return to origin?

**Return to origin (RTO)** is the courier term for a parcel that goes back to the sender because delivery failed. Common reasons:

- the customer refuses the parcel at the door,
- the phone is switched off or the customer does not answer,
- the address is incomplete or wrong,
- the customer is not available after several attempts,
- the customer ordered the same item from another page and took that one instead.

RTO is different from a normal return, where the customer accepts the product and sends it back later.

## Why does it matter for sellers in Bangladesh?

Because most chat orders are [cash on delivery](https://salemag.net/glossary/cash-on-delivery), the customer has paid nothing when the courier arrives, so saying no costs them nothing. For the seller, every RTO means delivery cost paid for nothing, possibly a return charge, stock stuck in transit and sometimes damaged packaging. A high RTO rate can wipe out the profit of a busy campaign.

## How do shops reduce RTO?

- Confirm every order by message before shipping, with the items and total.
- Collect a complete address with area and a landmark.
- Send a reminder when the parcel leaves and on delivery day.
- Take a small advance on high-value or repeat-refusal orders.
- Watch which areas, products or ads produce the most returns.

## Example

A shop sees many RTOs from a weekend flash sale. It starts sending a confirmation template the same evening asking customers to reply YES. Orders with no reply get a call before shipping, and fewer parcels come back.

## FAQ

### Is RTO the same as a customer return?

No. A customer return happens after the customer accepts and later sends the product back. RTO happens when the parcel is never accepted in the first place.

### Who pays for an RTO?

It depends on your courier's terms. Sellers often lose the delivery charge and may pay a return charge, plus the cost of packing and the time the stock was away.

### What is a good RTO rate?

It varies by category, region and courier. Track your own rate over time and compare it before and after changes like order confirmation.
