A shop in Uttara starts on the WhatsApp Business app. One phone, one person, maybe thirty chats a day. Then the Facebook ads start working. The owner adds a second staff member, and now both of them are passing the same phone back and forth, replying from WhatsApp Web on two laptops, and nobody is sure who promised which customer a Friday delivery.
That is usually the moment someone says "we need the API". This guide explains what the WhatsApp Business API actually is, whether your business needs it yet, what Meta asks for, what it costs, and how to connect a Bangladeshi number without hiring a developer.
What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta’s official way for a business to run a WhatsApp number through software instead of a phone app. Customers still see a normal WhatsApp chat. On your side, messages arrive in an inbox or system that many people, automations and an AI chatbot can work at the same time.
A few terms you will see everywhere:
- WhatsApp Business Platform is Meta’s umbrella name for the business side of WhatsApp.
- Cloud API is the version of the API that Meta hosts. Almost every new connection today is on the WhatsApp Cloud API.
- WABA, short for WhatsApp Business Account, is the account in your Meta business portfolio that holds your numbers, templates and billing.
- BSP or tech provider is a company whose software plugs into the Cloud API and gives you the inbox, templates and automations.
There is no "WhatsApp API app" to download. If someone offers you one as an APK, that is not the official API.
Who needs the WhatsApp Business API in Bangladesh?
A business needs the API once one phone is no longer enough: more than one person answers chats, or it wants automation, template broadcasts and AI replies. A home baker with a dozen orders a week does not need it. A Facebook page doing a few hundred chats a day almost certainly does.
| Signal | Stay on the Business app | Move to the API |
|---|---|---|
| People answering chats | One | Two or more |
| Chats per day | A few dozen | Hundreds, or big spikes at Eid and 11.11 |
| Messages to old customers | Occasional, to people who saved your number | Regular offers and order updates |
| Night and Friday replies | You reply when you can | You want an AI or rules to answer |
| Order taking | Typed by hand | Collected by a form or a bot |
| Other channels | WhatsApp only | Messenger and Instagram in the same inbox |

What do I need before I apply?
You need four things: a Meta business portfolio, a phone number, a display name and a payment method. You do not need a registered company to start.
- A Meta business portfolio (formerly Business Manager) in Meta Business Suite. Use the same business name you use on your Page and, if you have one, your trade licence.
- A phone number that can receive an SMS or a voice call for the verification code. It can be a mobile or a landline. It cannot stay on personal WhatsApp. A number already on the WhatsApp Business app can often keep working there through coexistence, if Meta’s signup flow says the number is eligible.
- A display name that clearly relates to your business, such as "Rongdhonu Fashion", not "Best Deals BD". Meta reviews it.
- A payment method on the WhatsApp Business Account. Without one, Meta does not deliver paid messages, and since 1 October 2026 that includes service replies beyond the free monthly allowance. Add it on day one.
Meta Business verification, where you upload documents such as a trade licence, is optional at the start. It matters later, when you want to message more customers first. We cover the documents and the usual rejections in our guide to Meta Business verification in Bangladesh.
How do I get the WhatsApp Business API?
You get the API in one of two ways: build directly on Meta’s Cloud API, or connect through a platform that uses Meta’s embedded signup. Most Bangladeshi businesses take the second route, because it needs no code.
Option 1: Build on the Cloud API yourself
A developer creates a Meta app, adds the WhatsApp product, sets up a webhook server to receive messages, and calls Meta’s Graph API to send them. You get full control and no platform fee, but you also build and run your own inbox, template screens, opt-in records and automation. This makes sense for companies with an in-house tech team.
Option 2: Connect through a platform with embedded signup
Embedded signup is a Meta login window inside the platform. The steps look like this:
- In the platform, open WhatsApp setup and click connect.
- Log in with the Facebook account that manages your business portfolio.
- Choose or create the business and the WhatsApp Business Account.
- Add the phone number and enter the code Meta sends by SMS or call.
- The platform subscribes to your account’s webhooks, registers the number and syncs any templates you already have.
The whole thing usually takes a few minutes. Once it is done, test it: send "hi" from a different phone and watch it arrive in the inbox.
What rules come with the API?
The API comes with four rules that the app mostly hides from you: the 24-hour window, templates, opt-in and messaging limits. Learn them before you plan a campaign.
- The 24-hour window. For 24 hours after a customer’s latest message, you can send any free-form reply: text, photos, voice notes, buttons. When the 24-hour window closes, you can only send a Meta-approved template.
- Templates. A message template is a pre-written message Meta approves before you use it. Each one is marketing, utility or authentication. An Eid offer is marketing; "your order CH-1024 is confirmed" is utility.
- Opt-in. Send templates only to people who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. A customer who messaged you first, or ticked a box on your order form, counts. A phone list bought from someone else does not.
- Messaging limits. Meta caps how many unique customers you can message first in a rolling 24 hours. As of October 2026, new business portfolios start at 250. Verifying the business, or sending enough good-quality templates, takes you to 2,000, and the limit keeps rising when your quality stays high. The limit is shared by every number in the portfolio. Replies inside an open window do not count.
Your quality rating sits on top of all this. If many customers block or report your messages, Meta can slow your growth or restrict the number. Unwanted promotions are the usual cause.
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in Bangladesh?
The WhatsApp Business API has two costs: Meta’s charge per delivered message, and the fee of the platform you use. Messages customers send you are free.
Meta’s side has changed twice recently:
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| 1 July 2025 | Meta switched from charging per 24-hour conversation to charging per delivered template message. Utility templates sent inside an open window became free. |
| 1 October 2026 | Each number gets 1,000 free service messages (free-form replies) per month, and service messages after that are charged. Utility templates inside an open window are charged again. Bangladesh became its own market on Meta’s rate card, with lower utility and authentication rates. |
The rate for each message depends on its category and the customer’s country code, and Meta updates it every few months. Look up the current numbers on Meta’s pricing page rather than trusting a figure in a blog post. What mistakes do Bangladeshi businesses make when they start?
The most common mistakes are rushing the number, the name and the first campaign. All three are easy to avoid.
- Using the owner’s personal number. Once it is on the API, it is a business line. Pick a number the business will keep for years.
- A display name that doesn’t match anything. If your Page says "Nilachol Saree House" and your display name says "NSH Online Shop BD", expect questions from Meta.
- Uploading the whole customer sheet on day one. A new portfolio cannot message thousands of people first in one day, and a cold blast to people who never opted in is the fastest way to a low quality rating.
- Submitting templates the night before Eid. Approval is often fast, but not always. Submit order-update and offer templates at least a week before you need them.
- Buying an "unofficial API". Tools that run WhatsApp Web on a server or link by QR code are not the Business Platform. They can get the number banned, and they cannot send approved templates.
How does SaleMag connect the WhatsApp Business API?
SaleMag connects your number to Meta’s official Cloud API through embedded signup on its Channel Setup page, so no developer is needed. After you log in with Facebook and add the number, SaleMag registers it, subscribes to webhooks and syncs your templates.
From there, your team answers WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram from one shared inbox. The composer shows whether the 24-hour window is open and switches to the template picker when it has closed. Keyword, welcome and away rules can answer first, and an AI chatbot running on your own OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key replies in Bangla or Banglish from your product list and can take cash-on-delivery orders with an in-WhatsApp order form. SaleMag supports coexistence, so an eligible number can stay in the WhatsApp Business app too. The full feature list is on the WhatsApp Business API page.
SaleMag does not connect to couriers or take bKash or Nagad payments; your team still books delivery as usual.
Next steps
Write down three things before you start: the number you will use, the display name, and the first two templates you need (one order update, one offer). Then connect the number, send yourself a test message, and run it for a week with your real customers before you plan a big broadcast.
Start free to connect your number, or see pricing for SaleMag plans.

Frequently asked questions
What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta’s official interface for businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages through software. It has no phone app of its own; messages reach a platform or your own system, where a team, automations or an AI chatbot can answer them.
Is the WhatsApp Business API free in Bangladesh?
No. Meta charges per delivered message, with rates by message category and the customer’s country, and the platform you use usually charges its own fee. Messages customers send to you are free.
Can I get the WhatsApp Business API without a company registration?
Yes, you can start without one. Meta lets a new business portfolio connect a number before business verification, but verification, which needs official documents such as a trade licence, is one of the ways to raise your messaging limit later.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number for the API?
Yes, in most cases. A number on the WhatsApp Business app can often be connected with coexistence, so it keeps working in the app. A number on personal WhatsApp has to be removed from that app first.
What is the difference between the Cloud API and a BSP?
The Cloud API is Meta’s hosted WhatsApp Business API. A BSP or tech provider is a company whose software connects to the Cloud API for you and gives you an inbox, templates and automation on top.
Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp Business API?
No, not if you use a platform with Meta’s embedded signup. You log in with Facebook, choose your business and number, and the platform handles webhooks and registration. Building directly on the Cloud API does need a developer.
Can I send bulk messages with the WhatsApp Business API?
Yes, as template broadcasts to customers who opted in. Each template must be approved by Meta first, and a daily messaging limit caps how many unique customers you can message first in 24 hours.
