What is an authentication message?
An authentication message is a message template in the authentication category. Its only job is to deliver a one-time passcode (OTP), for example when a customer:
- signs in to your app or website,
- verifies a new phone number,
- confirms a password reset or a sensitive change.
Unlike marketing and utility templates, you do not write the main text freely. Meta provides preset wording ("{{1}} is your verification code"), with optional extras such as a security warning not to share the code and an expiry time. You can add a copy code button, and on Android a one-tap autofill option where your app supports it.
Why does it matter for businesses in Bangladesh?
Most local apps and shops still send OTPs by SMS. Delivery can be slow on some operators, and plain SMS from an unknown number looks like spam. A WhatsApp OTP arrives under your verified business name, which many customers trust more. Keep SMS as a fallback for people without WhatsApp or mobile data. A masking SMS sender ID helps there.
Example
A grocery app asks a new user for their phone number. The user receives:
482913 is your verification code. For your security, do not share this code. This code expires in 10 minutes. [Copy code]
The user taps Copy code, pastes it into the app and is signed in.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add a promotion to an OTP message?
No. Authentication templates use preset wording from Meta and are for passcodes only.
Is WhatsApp OTP better than SMS OTP?
It depends on your customers. WhatsApp shows the business name and can offer a copy-code button, while SMS reaches phones without WhatsApp or data. Many businesses keep SMS as a fallback.
How much does an authentication message cost?
Meta sets the rate by country and category and updates it. Check the current rates before you replace SMS OTP.
