An Instagram shop selling bags out of Uttara posts a reel at 9 pm. By 11 pm there are 140 DMs. Sixty of them say "price?", thirty say "ei color ta ache?", twenty are screenshots of the reel, and a few are people asking whether you deliver to Sylhet. By the time someone replies the next morning, half of those people have bought from the page that answered at 9:15.
Instagram DM automation is how a small shop answers the first sixty in seconds and saves human time for the rest. The trick is knowing which messages to hand to a bot and which to keep.
What is Instagram DM automation?
Instagram DM automation is software that receives a business's Instagram direct messages and replies to routine ones without a person typing each answer. It connects to your account through Meta's official messaging API, so it does not need your password.
There are three levels, and most shops need the third:
| Level | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram's own tools | Saved replies, FAQ prompts, simple automated responses | Very small accounts |
| Keyword bots | Fixed answer when a message contains a word like "price" | One product, one price |
| AI chatbot | Reads the question and answers from your product list and policies | Shops with many products, sizes and colours |
A keyword bot fails the moment a customer writes "ei bag er dam koto, ar black ta ache?" in one message. An AI chatbot that searches your catalog can answer both parts.
Which Instagram DMs should a shop automate?
Automate questions whose answer is a fact you already have written down: price, stock, sizes, colours, delivery charge, delivery time and payment method.
| DM | Automate? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| "Price?" / "Dam koto?" | Yes | Price is in your product list |
| "M size ache?" | Yes | Options and stock are in your product list |
| "Sylhet e delivery koto?" | Yes | Delivery charges are fixed |
| "Kobe pabo?" | Yes | Delivery time is a written policy |
| "Order korbo" | Yes | The bot can build the cart and send an order form |
| A screenshot with "eta?" | Usually no | Many bots read text only |
| "2 ta nile kom hobe?" | No | Discounts are your decision |
| "Parcel e problem" | No | Complaints need a person |
| "Custom size banano jabe?" | No | Custom work needs a person |
A rule of thumb: if two people on your team would give the same answer, the bot can give it. If they would argue about it, a person should.
What do I need to set up Instagram DM automation?
You need an Instagram professional account (business or creator), a Facebook Page linked to it, and permission for connected tools to read your messages.
- Professional account. Switch in the Instagram app's account settings if you are still on a personal account.
- Linked Facebook Page. Link the Instagram account to the Page you manage, through Meta Business Suite or Page settings. Messaging tools find your Instagram account through this Page.
- Message access. In the Instagram app's message settings, allow connected tools to access messages. Without this, the tool cannot see DMs.
- A messaging tool. Log in with Facebook, pick the Instagram account, and the tool subscribes to Meta's webhooks so new DMs arrive.
If the account does not show up in the tool, the Page-to-Instagram link is almost always the problem.
What Meta rules apply to Instagram DM automation?
Meta lets businesses reply freely to an Instagram DM for a limited time after the customer's last message, generally 24 hours. After that, normal promotional follow-ups are not allowed. Meta also requires business messaging to follow its platform policies, and unofficial bots that log in with your username and password break Instagram's terms.
What this means day to day:
- Speed matters twice. A fast reply wins the sale and keeps you inside the window.
- No cold DMs. Automation answers people who wrote to you. It is not a tool for messaging strangers.
- Ask for WhatsApp if you need later follow-up. If the customer wants restock alerts, invite them to message you on WhatsApp, where approved templates can reach them later with their opt-in.
How do I write bot answers that sound like my shop?
Write your policies in the language your customers use and keep each answer short. Instagram buyers in Bangladesh often write in Banglish, so a good bot reply to "ei bag ta koto? black ache?" looks like this:
Ei bag ta ৳1,850. Black ache, ar 4 ta stock e ache. Dhakar moddhe delivery ৳60, Dhakar baire ৳120. Order korte chaile bolun, ami order form pathiye dicchi.
And to a customer writing in English:
This bag is ৳1,850 and black is in stock. Delivery is ৳60 inside Dhaka and ৳120 outside. Want me to send you the order form?
The prices and charges above are examples. What matters is that every number comes from your product list or delivery settings, not from the bot's imagination. That is also why the product list must be updated before a sale, not during it.
How do I handle screenshots and photos?
Ask for the product code, and have a person answer screenshots. Many Instagram customers send a screenshot of a reel or post instead of typing. If your bot reads text only, those messages should go to a person quickly.
Two habits reduce the load:
- Put a short product code in every post caption and on the image, such as "Code: BG-104".
- Add a line to your welcome or fallback reply: "Product er code ta likhle ekhoni dam ar stock janiye dibo."
What does a good Instagram DM workflow look like?
A good workflow lets the bot take the first reply, sends the hard chats to the right person, and turns ready buyers into orders. For a shop with two people:
| Step | Who |
|---|---|
| DM arrives | Lands in the team inbox with other channels |
| Price, stock, delivery questions | AI chatbot |
| Customer wants to order | Bot builds the cart and sends an order form |
| Screenshot, bargaining, complaint | Handed to a person, who is notified |
| Order placed | Team confirms, packs and ships |
If you also sell on Messenger and WhatsApp, run all three in one inbox and split the work by job, as described in our guide to a shared inbox for Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. For the price-question side specifically, see how to auto-answer 'price koto?' messages from your catalog.
How does SaleMag handle Instagram DMs?
SaleMag's Instagram DM automation brings a professional account's DMs into the same team inbox as WhatsApp and Messenger. You connect it from Channel Setup by logging in with Facebook. Photos and attachments come into the thread, and messages your team sends from the Instagram app are recorded too.
The AI chatbot answers from your knowledge base and product list, in the customer's language, and is instructed never to invent prices, stock or links. With order taking on, it sends a secure order-form link for a cash-on-delivery order. It reads text only, so screenshots go to your team. It hands chats over for complaints, bulk orders, custom requests and changes to placed orders, through human handover. SaleMag does not reply to comments on posts or reels.

Frequently asked questions
Can I automate Instagram DMs for my shop?
Yes. An Instagram professional account linked to a Facebook Page can connect to a messaging tool through Meta's official API, which can then answer DMs automatically and pass harder chats to your team.
Is Instagram DM automation allowed by Meta?
Yes, through Meta's official messaging API and within its rules. Replies must generally be sent within 24 hours of the customer's last message, and the account must follow Meta's policies. Unofficial bots that log in with your password risk the account.
Can an Instagram bot reply in Bangla and Banglish?
Yes, if it is an AI chatbot that replies in the customer's language. SaleMag's chatbot answers Bangla, Banglish and English DMs in the same language the customer used.
Can a bot understand product screenshots in Instagram DMs?
Not always. SaleMag's AI chatbot reads text messages only, so a screenshot with 'eta ache?' goes to your team in the inbox. Ask customers to send the product code or name for an instant answer.
Does SaleMag reply to Instagram comments?
No. SaleMag automates Instagram direct messages, not comments on posts or reels. Comment replies still have to be done in Instagram or Meta Business Suite.
Can customers order from an Instagram DM?
Yes. With SaleMag's order taking on, the chatbot builds the cart and sends a secure order-form link where the customer chooses the delivery area and enters name, phone and address for a cash-on-delivery order.
Do I need a developer to connect Instagram?
No. In tools like SaleMag you log in with Facebook, choose the Instagram account linked to your Page, and the tool subscribes it to Meta's webhooks for you.
