Conversational commerce

Conversational commerce means selling through chat: answering questions, recommending products and taking orders on WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram.

What is conversational commerce?

Conversational commerce is selling through a conversation instead of a self-service web page. The whole journey, or most of it, happens in a messaging app:

  1. Discovery: the customer clicks an ad or post and starts a chat.
  2. Questions: price, sizes, colours, delivery time.
  3. Recommendation: the seller suggests products and sends photos.
  4. Order: the cart, delivery details and total are confirmed in chat or a short form.
  5. After the sale: confirmations, delivery updates, reorders and offers.

The seller can be a person, an AI agent, or both working together, with the AI handling routine questions and people taking over when needed.

Why does it matter for sellers in Bangladesh?

For most small online shops in Bangladesh, conversational commerce is not a trend; it is how selling already works. Customers prefer to ask before buying, and chat feels personal. The challenge is doing it at scale: replying in seconds at midnight, never losing an order in a long thread, and following up without spamming. That is where a shared inbox, AI replies, in-chat order forms and opt-in broadcasts come in.

Example

A customer clicks a Click-to-WhatsApp ad for sneakers. The AI assistant answers "size 42 ache?", suggests a second colour, sends an order form with the delivery charge, and places a COD order. Two days later a utility template tells the customer the parcel is out for delivery, and a month later an opted-in offer brings them back.

SaleMag is built for this flow, from the first reply to the AI order taking and follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Is conversational commerce the same as f-commerce?

They overlap. F-commerce is selling on Facebook, which in practice happens mostly in chat. Conversational commerce is the wider idea of selling through any messaging channel.

Do I need an AI chatbot for conversational commerce?

No. A person replying in chat is already conversational commerce. AI helps when the volume of chats grows beyond what your team can answer quickly.

Can customers pay inside the chat?

Some channels support payments in some countries. In Bangladesh most chat orders are still cash on delivery, with the order collected in chat or through a form.
